What is the Wheel of Life?
The Wheel of Life is the simplest coaching exercise to take stock of where you are: you rate your satisfaction in key areas of your life, and the circle immediately maps out your balance. A round wheel rolls smoothly — a bumpy one doesn't. Your lowest score isn't something to feel bad about: it's simply where life feels stuck right now.
The power of this exercise is that it forces you to look at the big picture. We all tend to optimize what's already working well — work when we're great at our job — and avoid what's not. The wheel makes that avoidance impossible to ignore.
How to interpret your results
- The lowest area often drives the others: a health score of 3 drains the energy you need for work, relationships, or hobbies. That's almost always where you should start.
- The gaps matter as much as the scores: two areas at 8 and one at 2 mean living at two different speeds.
- No need for 10s everywhere : the goal isn't perfection, but eliminating the blind spots that hold everything else back.
What's next?
The wheel comes down to one question: “What is the smallest step that would boost this area by just one point?” Not a massive life plan, not a resolution — just one step. A phone call, signing up for something, an overdue conversation, a 20-minute daily walk. Try the exercise again in a month: the wheel is also a great tracking tool.
That's exactly how Loane works: the app helps you pinpoint the area that needs attention, builds a step-by-step action plan, and tracks your progress — with a coach who remembers everything you share. If your wheel reveals a “ job that has lost its meaning ” or thoughts that loop endlessly at night, our articles break down practical methods to help.
The 8 classic areas
- Work & career — daily fulfillment, growth, purpose
- Health & energy — sleep, physical fitness, everyday energy
- Love life & relationships — your relationship, or the space it takes up
- Family & friends — quality of bonds, time spent together
- Finances — security, peace of mind around money
- Personal growth — learning, progressing, challenging yourself
- Leisure & fun — fun, downtime, pure creativity
- Living environment — housing, surroundings, living space
These areas are a starting point, not a rule. If “studies”, “parenting”, or “spirituality” matter more to you than one of the listed areas, swap it out — it’s your wheel.
